I support these commitments because consumers have a right to clear information so that they can make fully-informed choices. In the last five years a big step forward has been made on protection from dangerous chemicals, through the measures known as REACH. I believe the biggest challenge ahead is to give consumers much better information about the energy they are using. People want to save money and save the planet but don't know how best to do that in their everyday lives. That is why I am passionate about keeping the clear A to G labelling system which everybody understands. Indeed it must be extended to other products such as tyres. Information on energy performance should be included in all promotional material so that consumers know where they stand before they buy. In addition, the Government needs to bring forward a sytematic roll-out of smart meters, as we have called for several times in the European Parliament, so that every household can see in real time the connection between everday activities and the amount of energy used.
